Meet the Makers
Our creative journey really began not long after we bought our first home together here in Northern California. Something about having a space of our own seemed to flip a creative switch in my brain. I started experimenting with chalk paint, refinishing furniture and decorating little corners of the house.
Not long after, that creativity turned into sewing. I grew up learning to sew from my grandmother, and before long I found myself designing and selling little girls’ dresses ~ sweet, colorful pieces that turned creativity into a real small business.
Over time my creative interests continued to grow, eventually leading me to customizing Blythe dolls ~ a hobby that introduced me to a whole world of tiny details and miniature charm. Looking back, I think that love of small, whimsical things quietly paved the way for the tiny houses that would come later.
As my projects evolved, we decided to bring a laser into the mix. I’ll admit… the very first time I used it I almost started a fire. Thankfully, that moment is long behind me, and these days I’m much more comfortable with it ~ though we still laugh about that first attempt.
With the laser came a whole new chapter of creating. I began designing small wooden décor pieces ~ sweet, cutesy, giftable items that added personality to everyday spaces.
When it came time to name the shop, I wanted something that felt cozy, sweet, and a little like home. The name Wooden Nest came from that idea ~ wooden for the handmade pieces we create, and nest for the warmth and comfort that home should bring.
The racks came a little later, when I bought my Lenox Spice Village set and realized I couldn’t find a display rack that felt quite right. I wanted something that looked like it belonged with the little houses themselves ~ soft, charming, and a little storybook-like.
That’s where my husband comes in. With more than 30 years of experience in construction and woodworking, he brings the craftsmanship and structural know-how that make each rack solid, balanced, and built to last. Without him, these racks simply wouldn’t be possible.
While he focuses on the building side, I design the details ~ the shapes, trim, and especially the rooftops that give each rack its cottage-like character.
Every piece we make is created in small batches and built by hand, with careful attention to the details that make it both beautiful and lasting.
Together, we create pieces inspired by storybook cottages, cozy kitchens, and the idea that everyday spaces can still feel a little magical. Most days you’ll find us surrounded by sawdust, paint, tiny design details, and plenty of coffee.
And while the racks have become a favorite, they’re only one part of what we love to create. We’re excited to keep exploring new designs that bring warmth, charm, and a little bit of whimsy into the home.
Thank you for being part of the Wooden Nest story.
